GoDaddy has decided the .XXX business is just too good to pass on, with customers who will be looking for new domains come the adult website land grab in October.
The new domain has been created specifically for adult content, but plenty of GoDaddy’s customers have already said they want new products in addition to their current branding on the traditional extensions.
Companies with a web presence and trademark protection can claim their own names on the new porn playing field. The domain administrator, the ICM Registry, has set up a “sunrise period” in September that gives owners a first shot. But the field opens up the next month, and some experts predict some domain names will generate millions of dollars.
The adult industry is already the biggest business on the web, beating out all search engines and software companies combined, to the tune of 40-plus billion dollars annually. Naturally, GoDaddy would like to be in on the gold rush, saying, “A large number of our customers have spoken… and there is a demand for the controversial new domain name extensionÂ-for both brand protection purposes and for new names. So what are we going to do? GoDaddy is going to give our customers what they want.”
