They also took over small tasks normally assigned to nurses, such as delivering meals, providing patients with audio visual equipment and handing out packages, flowers and mail. Candy stripers were hospital volunteers, usually young women, assigned the task of boosting patient morale in the 1960s through 1980s.

It all sounds so vaguely Hansel and Gretel, doesn’t it.
Did corporations start this trick-or-treat paranoia to keep homemade candy off the streets? nDo we gladly retell the tales of razor blades in things to put to scares and danger back into Halloween? Who knows what lurks in that homemade popcorn ball. Nowadays, only hermetically sealed candy from the candy corporations will be accepted by most Mom’s.

Later that evening, I thought about the incident and became increasingly angry about how the school had presented the candy sale and the opportunity for prizes to impressionable young children. The only potential winners in this contest would be those children whose parents hawked the candy to their own church groups, offices and social networks, since all of the neighbors had children of their own and were already stretched thin. I vented my frustrations in a letter to the principal and sent it to school with my candy order the next morning.

While mixture is boiling, generously prepare a baking sheet with cooking spray. Boil mixture to 300 degrees using a candy thermometer without stirring. When mixtures reaches 300 degrees remove from heat and quickly dip each apple until it is throughly coated.
Set coated apples, standing on their bottoms with stick pointing upwards on baking sheet.

The penny candy counter in Taylors General Store was a wondrous sight. I went up on my toes, quickly grabbed a Black Jack candy and slipped it into my coat pocket. A devious nature, I suppose. Taylor used the big metal scoop to bag up root beer barrels for my mother, I decided I wanted a Black Jack. I don’t know why I did not just ask for the candy. There were open bins filled with just about every kind of candy that my four year old self could imagine.I had to stand on my tiptoes to get a good look. One day I did more than look.

Four of my stay-at-home mom friends and their children, who all happen to be girls, are coming over for a morning of snacks and crafts. As soon as I walked in I spotted a huge display of Valentine’s candy and decided to make candy jars. I plan to throw a bunch of red, white and pink art supplies on the kitchen table and let everybody go to town. Next week, my two-year olds and I are throwing a Valentine’s Day party for several of our friends.
The other day we made a trip to Dollar Tree to stock up on glue and markers and see what inspired us. I grabbed several bags each of sweethearts, a.k.a. My girls and I have been working on decorations all week. conversation heart, and red hots. I also found sound foam to cover the lids and some embellishments to glue on the jars.

He told me I was courageous
and that he admired me something fierce
He cared about what I had suffered
And wasn’t embarrassed by my tears.
His tender manner touched my wounds
with such gentleness where I was most raw.
He spoke to me so tenderly
My frozen feelings began to thaw. That is when the crush began
He treated me with such kindness
I had never experienced from a man.

But I don’t let him see me
I would feel out of place.
I stare at him with longing
When he does not see
The butterflies flutter in my stomach
Trying to get free.
I have spoken with him before
A big grin spreads across my face.
Oh, but my heart beats so loudly
Pounding in my chest
When I imagine just talking to him
My cheek feels caressed. I giggle when I see him.

The school was selling some kind of boxed candies and my six year old first grader came home bubbling with excitement chattering happily about all of the wonderful prizes she could win by selling the candy to the neighbors. And still she continued trying until she finally burst into tears and sobbed, “Mommy, no one would buy any from me!” She continued crying on the short walk home and I cried too. Although I knew that she had little chance of winning a prize, I walked down the street with her and stood on the sidewalk as she diligently approached house after house with no success.

The children didn’t light the candy.
But when a lunchtime crew of sixth-graders last fall started “smoking” Smarties, the tart, chalky candy discs wrapped in cellophane, lunchroom monitors and the school nurse were flummoxed. They crushed it into a fine powder in its wrapper, tore off one end, poured the powder into their mouths and blew out fine Smarties dust, mimicking a smoker’s exhale.
Students who smoke cigarettes are suspended. Summit Middle School in Frisco, Colo., is a tobacco-free campus.
